Worth The Risk? Marketers Adjusting ROI Metrics To Factor Confidence, Transform Investments

ROI has long been a valuable metric for marketers … if not particularly for those who complement their ROI numbers by casting it alongside other marketing outcomes such as brand awareness, customer satisfaction, and other long-term elements that have their righteous place in The Big Picture.

Cassandra, a marketing platform, says a metric such as their risk-adjusted ROI can balance uncertainty and confidence into the equation, helping marketers “make more informed budget allocation decisions by accounting for both expected returns and the variability of those returns.”

Their formula:
Risk-Adjusted ROI = Median ROI / (1 + Confidence Interval Width)

The difference made by adjusting for risk in this way can be illustrated by Cassandra’s recent study of more than 1,200 MMMs representing 123 brands, 22 markets, and $1.85 billion spent in measured marketing from 2020 to 2025. Their ranking by median ROI would have marketers believe Instagram (9.3x), paid partnerships (8.7x), and Pinterest (8.6x) were the top marketing channels.

“When ranked by highest risk-adjusted ROI, the results are vastly different,” says Cassandra’s report, which brings marketing channels like Google (4.4x median ROI) and Meta (2.9x median ROI) back to the top as more-often used and “safer places to invest your marketing dollars.”

“Meta may be more valuable than raw ROI suggests,” says the report about putting a priority on predictability. “For brands with limited optimization resources, Meta’s consistency reduces management burden. Consider Meta as your primary mobile/social channel and Google as your primary search channel. … Diversification toward other channels may be beneficial as long as rapid testing can be executed when budget scales up.”
