As marketers continue to find value in efficiency-expanding AI tools at their disposal, the question of whether agentic AI systems — specifically, ones that “exhibit humanlike qualities or characteristics” — are ultimately necessary is the focus of a recent MIT Sloan Management Review debate.
Nearly 4 in 5 of the AI experts surveyed about anthropomorphic AI agree with the statement that “responsible AI governance requires questioning the necessity of overly humanlike agentic AI systems,” with 32% strongly agreeing that, as the research authors put it, “responsible AI governance is not just about how a technology is designed or deployed but also about when it should be deployed.”

As businesses make these deployment decisions, the researchers offer a number of guidance recommendations, from accessing the appropriateness and need first to designing and deploying deliberately while continuously testing and monitoring.
“Clearly explain and document why humanlike traits are justified based on the system’s purpose and intended user base,” write the researchers, “and ensure their benefits outweigh potential risks.”
